Most rad month of concerts ever! Spent most of the month accompanying Pelican while touring with Russian Circles throughout the Midwest and West Coast. Upon arriving back home to Boston, I went right back out for two more days for Cave In and Glacier as they played around New England.
Legendary riff lords, Pelican are about to unleash their seventh full-length album, Flickering Resonance, this May via Run For Cover Records. To support the forthcoming release, the band accepted an invitation from their long-time friends, Russian Circles, for a tour that would be quite special for all involved.
Pelican played 17 shows in 21 days throughout the Midwest and West Coast, some places which they haven’t visited in quite some time. It was a pleasure getting to know the band and hearing stories of previous tours, as well as seeing the reactions of so many fans. Not to mention hearing a lot of new songs and older favorites every night.
Three weeks and over 6,000 miles… I cannot believe that I joined one of my favorite bands on tour. We drove through a dust storm, up and down curving slushy mountain passes, and constant wind gusts that rocked the van. Thank you Pelican and Russian Circles for a surreal experience of a lifetime. Feels like the most rad fever dream ever.
At the end of the month, and just a couple of days after returning home from tour, set back out for two more days to catch two of Boston’s heavy riffers Cave In and Glacier as they bopped around New England for a pair of dates in Providence, RI and Portland, ME. The former was at a neighborhood bar, music venue, and vintage store all-in-one called Myrtle – a pretty cool spot. The second show was inside the Blending & Bottling location of Oxbow Brewing, it’s where they blend and package all of their aged beers – I, of course, picked up a few bottles.
Glacier tested the limits of the soundsystems with new songs from their recently released album, A Distant, Violent Shudder. Cave In would perform songs spanning several albums, newer tunes and older favorites.
