Slower-than-normal month, but as always, the shows were of the highest caliber. Caught up with old friends when The Atlas Moth swung through. A powerhouse of a grindy hardcore gig with riffs chugging and bodies flying off the stage. The month ended with another party at Widowmaker Brewing featuring some of the region’s finest.
Kicking off the month featured the recently reactivated The Atlas Moth, who were touring with Oriska to and from the Prepare the Ground Festival in Toronto, Ontario. Old Boston friends of The Atlas Moth opened the show, members now of blackened doom band Severed Boy, at the Upstairs room of the Middle East.
Next, I would find myself in the Downstairs room for a grind/hardcore throwdown with an action-packed lineup of Clique, Jarhead Fertilizer, Kruelty, Full of Hell, and Harm’s Way. California political actionaries Clique would kick the doors open; they have recently joined the ranks of Closed Casket Activities to see their first LP and subsequent EPs on vinyl for the first time. Grindcore misfits Jarhead Fertilizer would then rattle the crowd into a frenzy. Japan’s Kruelty is an ignorant force of the most doomed hardcore your ears can handle, their last EP ‘Profane Usurpation’ was also issued by Closed Caskets. Full of Hell dropped a new EP, ‘Broken Sword, Rotten Shield,’ last month via CCA, which also issued last year’s ‘Coagulated Bliss.’ Headliners Harm’s Way continued the ruckus until the very last snare hit. Their second album, 2011’s ‘Isolation’ and the 2010 EP ‘No Gods, No Masters,’ were released by the aforementioned label before moving on Deathwish and Metal Blade.
Wrapping up the month, The Outlourdes would celebrate their third album, ‘Humanity is Killing Us All,’ at Widowmaker Brewing with Mother Iron Horse coming down from the gallows of Salem, Massachusetts, and Portland, Maine power rockers Viqueen.
