Gum Wall – Seattle, WA

Journal
Strange & Unusual

Around the corner from the famed Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington, you may find the infamous “Gum Wall,” not just a wall, but a whole alleyway literally covered in chewed bubble gum.

It began in 1991, Unexpected Productions’ Theatresports took the location over, where they still hold small events and comedy shows to this day. Patrons and even some performers of the theater would stick their used gum to the walls and push pennies into it. While the coins stopped being placed, the gum stayed.

The wall was fully cleaned in 2015 using a low-pressure method with steam machines that reached upwards of 280°F to scrape the pieces off without harming the bricks. This would be the first time the wall would be cleaned in twenty years. Over 2,350 pounds of gum were removed and brought to a landfill. It took 130 hours to complete. Almost immediately, gum began to reappear along the wall.
